Best ATMs for Bars and Restaurants

Are you an bar or restaurant owner? Perhaps you are an ATM operator and were wondering about the best ATMs for bars and/or restaurants?

As most of you have seen from personal experience, a free-standing ATM is the most popular. And, better yet, most bars and restaurants have their ATM machines located inside, so there is no need to worry about the potential extra cost of having an ATM that has upgraded security measures and can also handle the elements.

How to Decide on the Right ATM for a Bar or Restaurant

Just like every person is different, so is every business, even businesses within the same industry. Therefore, one bar may need a slightly different ATM than the bar located across town, or even down the street.

There are several features of the ATM which should be evaluated in making your decision:

  1. What capacity cassette do you need? 1000 note cassettes are standard and are adequate for 90% of all locations.
  2. Do you want a lit topper on the ATM to help customers locate the machine? A topper can help make the machine stand out more if it’s in a dimly lit area.
  3. How much space is available? Most ATMs have a very small footprint.
  4. Do you want a free-standing or through-the-wall machine? Free-standing are less expensive. Through the wall can be useful in tight spaces or if you want customers to have access to the ATM from the outside.

To best assess which ATM model might be best for your bar or restaurant, first take a couple of preliminary calculations. Figure out how many customers walk through your door on an average day. The amount of foot traffic can determine if you need a machine with a larger cassette, or one with the optional for multiple cassettes.

Also consider the type of restaurant or bar you have. Higher end establishments, the customers tend to pay by credit card, even if cash is available. Therefore, a machine with a larger cassette is probably not needed. Restaurants that only accept cash or that have gaming (pull tabs, video poker, etc) will go through higher amounts of cash.

Most Popular Type of ATM for Bars and Restaurants

The most common kind of ATM is the kind that stands up on its own, also known as a “free standing ATM”. These free standing ATM machines require approx 3 sq ft in front of them for ADA compliance (about 36″ for a wheel chair). The machines themselves have a very small foot print and run anywhere from 14″ x 14″ up to 20″ x 20″ still relatively very little floor space for the return on investment.

Free standing ATMs are available from all of the popular manufacturers:

Additional ATM Option for Bars and Restaurants

With an average cost of around $2,000 – $3,000 for a free-standing ATM that would be a good fit for most bars and restaurants, an ATM is an investment that needs to be considered carefully.

Another option for bar and restaurant owners looking to buy an ATM for their business is to considered a used ATM. Used ATMs can save you on the upfront costs of owning a machine. You could almost consider a used ATM like an “extended test drive.” If after a period of time, you find that the ATM isn’t exactly what you want or need, an since ATM machines tend to hold their value quite well, you can probably re-sell the machine easily. One important factor when purchasing a used ATM is to make sure that the ATM is EMV upgraded, or at the very least, an EMV upgrade is available for that particular ATM make and model.
